What's happened to Diana? August 9, 2010 Samson S Liu (Mountain View, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My first introduction to Diana Krall was the All for You album, covering some of the older Nat King Cole songs. I was fairly impressed. Enjoyable if somewhat mannered singing and decent piano chops. Unfortunately stardom seemed to lead to increasingly commercial outcomes. And while you can say the same for Nat King Cole as well (his diminished playing was a true loss), the talent and end results are not comparable. Nat's singing and stylings were peerless while Diana's is marginal. When listening to her sing on this album I can't help but wonder if Diana was not physically well (although she looks fantastic on the cover). And her playing which to me is the more compelling (if a bit mainstream) part of her talents, has just about disappeared here as well. As another reviewer mentioned, I thought Bacharach's Walk on By and and How Can You Mend A Broken Heart were among the few that I enjoyed at all. It was a shame as I really liked the song selection.
Julie London with Piano Chops June 8, 2010 Lytlesound (Cincinnati, OH, USA) I have eagerly followed Dianna Krall since before the release of her "Look of Love" album. I was able to see her in concert in a small theater setting of 150 and even though she had a cold, she delivered both vocally and on the piano, but especially on the piano. She had kept up displaying her piano chops until she married Elvis Costello and then became more and more a Julie London with piano chops, but with more emphasis on the Julie London mode. Her jazz playing is becoming so secondary that I begin to wonder when its time to stop collecting her albums. "Quiet Nights" has songs, for the the most part, that she has performed better on other other albums and I may download the HDtracks version, but not purchase the CD. Had she released "Quiet Nights" in SACD, I may have still have purchased the hard copy just to support he medium. And, as she moves into listening modes best described as "easy" she is sure to appear on the smooth jazz stations, where are where jazz goes to die.
so good June 4, 2010 Lynne (CA USA) I think this is very lovely. So much like DK's first CDs.
Relaxing and completely enjoyable for dinner parties etc.
Thank you Diana.

Maybe it was a TOO Quiet Night... April 18, 2010 Christian Ellithorpe (Streamwood, IL United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really wanted to like this CD; I've enjoyed all her previous brilliant work, so it is hard to give this a low rating. It seems like someone wanted to make a completely different album, instead of a Diana Krall album. Why, after all her previous gems, would anyone want to do that? The first thing I noticed was how "breathy" her voice sounded. She doesn't HAVE a breathy tone...think of the power she's achieved on "The Best Thing for You (Would Be Me)", "This Can't Be Love", "Frim Fram Sauce" or even "Jingle Bells", (from her stellar Christmas release Diana Krall Christmas Songs ). Second thing that hit me was: this album features one after another, after another, slow-paced pieces. Where are the fast numbers like "The Best Thing for You (Would Be Me)", from When I Look in Your Eyes ??? And where and WHY would any producer hide her piano? I just don't get it; there's almost no piano improvisation on this album. Either it's buried or not in the mix at all. It's not a total loss; "Too Marvelous For Words" has some piano improvisation, and the nuances featured on The Very Best of Diana Krall or from When I Look in Your Eyes. Her take on Bacharach's "Walk On By" also remind me of her best work. I've always thought a Burt Bacharach tribute album would be a good idea for Diana Krall, with all of his twists & turns, changing tempos and key changes. Maybe an album like that would have been a better idea, since it might feature her vocal AND piano prowess a lot better than this.
